The Liberty Project: A PHOTO PROJECT IN HONOR OF DAW AUNG SAN SUU KYI
Vάclav Havel Prague ©2009 Inspired by the words of Burma democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi: "Please use your Liberty to promote ours". Suu Kyi has spent 15 of the past 20 years under house arrest. An on-going conceptual work, currently in four parts: "Ulla uses her liberty"; "Half-Mask" ; "Turkish Delights" and "Suu Kyi at the Oscars". First exhibited at Arta Gallery,Toronto, October, 2009. The Liberty Project: New Works will return to Arta Gallery, Toronto, May 15-30th, 2010. Television: Development and pilot for "Portfolio", a showcase for fine art photography and photojournalism on CBC News:Sunday, a weekly magazine program, now defunct. Hosted by Evan Solomon and Carole MacNeil, CBC News:Sunday, was known for leading edge journalism and a mandate of politics, spirituality and media. Essays included: Finbarr O'Reilly, World Press Award Winner, 2005; Ed Burtynsky - Manufacturing in China; Lana Slezik - Women in Afghanistan; Brian Howell- Celebrity Impersonators. "Regarding Mona", a photo essay focused on the behavior of tourists around the iconic painting of the Mona Lisa, aired in spring, 2005. The Mona Lisa had recently moved to new digs in the Salle des Etats, Louvre Museum, Paris. Following The Da Vinci Code book and movie, the Louvre had a record year with 7.3 million visitors.
PAST EXHIBITIONS:
PULP, a solo exhibition at Gibsone Jessop Gallery, May 2004, featured 30 images of found collage from an industrial site in Toronto. Full of cultural references and swatches from the news from discarded papers, magazines, maps, account ledgers which had been sorted by machine and were baled and waiting for recycling.
